Norwegian Forest Cat

🐈‍⬛ light & spooky 🐈‍⬛

not horror, but still spooky & festive!

From the Mind of Christine McConnell

webseries. a massively talented jack-of-all trades, Christine McConnell walks you through her myriad of creative endeavors—from constructing a gingerbread replica of the Winchester Mystery House, to restoring & refurbishing her 100+ year old Victorian home (she hand-paints her own 'wallpaper'!!!).

I could never hope to have the patience & skill required to do what she does, but rewatching Christine's creative process is a treat, in or out of the spooky season.

🤡 ghoulishly goofy 🤡

horror films with plenty of dark humor! these contain varying amounts of gore, but all are more funny than scary.

Fido (2007)

in the aftermath of a zombie outbreak, an idealic 1950s society does not collapse—it springs right back, with zombies being 'tamed' with mind-control collars and kept as... pets? surely such a set-up would never backfire!

╮ (. ❛ ᴗ ❛.) ╭

also of note: stars Carrie-Anne Moss of 'The Matrix'!

Jennifer's Body (2009)

a highschool mean-girl becomes a man-eating succubus after a demonic sacrifice (involving her AS the sacrifice) goes wrong. just girly things, right? a ton of fun!

Tucker & Dale vs Evil (2011)

Tucker & Dale, a pair of genuinely harmless rednecks, are mistaken as slasher villains by a group of college kids—a misunderstanding that only grows as, through a series of bizarre incidents, the kids start dropping like flies.

one of the gorier films of this category (someone... ahem... dives straight into a woodchipper), but lands firmly on 'ridiculous' rather than 'scary'.

Killer Klowns From Outer Space (1988)

a group of killer, alien clowns land their big-top-esque spaceship on Earth & terrorize a town. chock full of great ooey-gooey 1980s practical effects!

Vampire's Kiss (1989)

a professional jackass is bitten by a young woman, and believes that he is slowly turning into a vampire. he is almost certainly not turning into a vampire. high jinks ensue! stars Nic Cage!

and speaking of vampires and not-vampires, that leads into...

🧛 vampires, werewolves, & zombies too 🐺

horror films involving vampires and/or werewolves! & a zombie film thrown in there, too.

Underworld (2003)

of the 'Y2Cunt' era of scifi-fantasy action films. in a world in which there has been an age-old war between the vampires & lycans, the adopted daughter of a vampire elder finds herself drawn to a mortal sought after by the lycans.

the linked listing includes the entire Underworld film series, but in my opinion the first is the best!

Only Lovers Left Alive (2013)

two vampiric lovers (played by Tilda Swinton & Tom Hiddleston), married for centuries & now seperated, face the anxieties of the modern world & the malaise which arises from living such long lives.

beautifully shot & with a relaxing soundtrack, this film is especially enjoyable as an evening watch, winding down with a nice drink.

Let The Right One In (2008)

Swedish language. a bullied young boy befriends his new neighbor, who happens to be a vampire. a gruesome, but ultimately very sweet film.

Nosferatu (1922)

the original silent black&white film, with a banging instrumental soundtrack (with some haunting vocals!).

do we think that Nosferatu & Uncle Fester would be friends? bald-headed besties?

Nosferatu The Vampyre (1979)

a late 70s retelling of Nosferatu. Isabella Adjani, as always, is absolutely beautiful in this. also: so, so many white rats.

Ginger Snaps (2000)

two outcast sisters grow apart after the elder goes through puberty becomes a werewolf. both of the sequels are also available on TubiTV.

Train To Busan (2016)

Korean language. a trainful of passengers find themselves trapped on their commute when a zombie outbreak occurs—their only hope is to survive until their train reaches help in Busan. a fantastic modern zombie film.

😈 hauntings & hellish encounters 😈

films involving ghosts, ghouls, & demonic forces!

Ringu (1998)

die in seven days? so, a week? the original film with our girl Sadako!

The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)

during an autopsy of an unidentified female corpse, father-and-son coroners uncover bizare, contradictory conditions of the body—as well as the possibility that she is not, entirely, dead.

The Babadook (2014)

she baba'd all night until the dook came home. huh? what?

Hellraiser (1987)

a cursed puzzle-box which summons demons can grant wishes—and exquisite pain. more delightfully ooey-gooey 80s practical effects!

🩰 visually appealing horror 🩰

films which have set design, color palettes, and camera work that are especially aesthetically pleasing!

Suspiria (1977)

a young American ballet dancer arrives at a prestigious German dance school—but finds it hard to focus on her classes with an ocean of bugs falling through her dorm ceiling & the copious witchcraft afoot. oh, and also the murders.

a horror film with a strong use of color (especially reds and blues), & with a soundtrack done by a band called 'Goblin'. enough said!

Hausu (1977)

Japanese language. in some ways, this film is like 'Suspiria's sister with a stronger sense of humor. a psychedelic horror-comedy about a group of school friends, whose vacation becomes horrific after they all go to visit the home of one girl's estranged aunt.

there's a fluffy kitty-cat in this one!

Viy (1967)

Russian language. a drunken monk attacks a witch while wandering one night, then must pray for three nights beside her coffin in a church, all while being bombarded by the witch's curse from beyond the grave.

at one point the witch rides her coffin like a surfboard through the air. a must-see.

Possession (1981)

an unhappy couple do perhaps the worst possible job of seeking a divorce. an absolutely trip—and, as always, Isabelle Adjani is beautiful (& downright traumatizing) in this.

and yes! this IS the film with the fucked up subway scene!

(。•̀ᴗ-)✧

Mandy (2018)

Red & Mandy, a couple living a solitary life in the mountains, find that life suddenly upended when a cult leader kidknaps Mandy. what follows is a chaotic, stylish nightmare as Red seeks to rescue Mandy from the cult's clutches.

another one with a banging soundtrack. stars Nic Cage!

a major warning for eyestrain & some flashing lights in this one.

The Love Witch (2016)

the tale of a young witch looking for love, told in a cinematic love-letter to the particular aesthetics of 1960s B-grade thrillers.

it is insane how much this film genuinely looks like a film from that era, and I believe that is entirely owed to the director (Anna Biller)'s vision & the work that she put into basically every aspect of the film—she even entirely latch-hooked a custom rug for one scene! an absolute visual treat.

Hannibal (2013)

series. yes, the entire Hannibal TV series is free to watch on TubiTV! witness Hannibal construct the most beautiful dishes of human meat, & Will Graham shiver & sweat like a chihuahua.

😱 fucked me up, personally 😱

films that were effective horror in that they, personally, fucked me up! but which I will never, ever watch again ♡

milage may vary, of course—a large part of why these effected me so strongly was because they made me sad! you may not find these particularly effecting at all.

Excision (2012)

a highschool girl wants to become a surgeon & be able to provide her younger sister with a lung transplant. the ending..... that ending 😐

May (2001)

a lonely young woman named May really, really wants to make a friend. made me cry :(

Possum (2018)

a disgraced puppeteer returns to his stepfather's home, having to confront surpressed childhood memories.

features one of the most fucked up 'puppets' I have had the displeasure to view with my own eyeballs.
